Personal Motivation Patterns In Websites

By Rodger Bailey

Traditionally, websites have three basic uses. These three uses are rooted in psychological theory which has been well-known for decades. The Psychologist, David McClelland, wrote about our motivations being based in power, affiliation, and achievement.

If you want power, you want to control or manage something. This could be through being the boss or being the leader who influences others. The focus of the person who wants power is to have others look up to them.

If you want affiliation, you want to belong. You are concerned about being a member and being accepted by the others. The focus of the person who wants affiliation is to be welcomed by the group.

If you want achievement, you want to have, to get, and to obtain. You are concerned about being the one who made the goal and the one who got the prize. The focus of the person who wants achievement is to be the winner who achieves the outcome.

These patterns show up as the motivation of websites as well as the motivation of people. Here are some examples of these motivation patterns showing up on the Internet.

The power website is designed to influence the most people and to be the one which controls some aspect of the Internet or of the information of the Internet. For instance Google is about power. This brand has majority control of searches, advertising, email, and even video hosting (now that they have the ownership of YouTube). And, Wiki has positioned itself to be the go-to location for general information on the Internet.

Social networks, such as Facebook, My Space, and Ning are designed to facilitate the affiliation needs of their members. They provide dozens (maybe even hundreds) of ways that members can interact with each other in an affiliation manner. People are becoming 'friends' and interacting with each other through conversation and other activities so that they fulfill their affiliation needs.

Internet marketing sites tend to be oriented towards achievement. The owners of these sites are searching for techniques and processes to achieve their outcomes. Generally, their outcomes are organized around achieving the sale. This involves a whole series of steps including copy writing, keyword selection, search engine optimization, squeeze pages, opt-in lists, sales pages, product launches, email marketing, influencing language, and a host of other parts of their sales approach.

There are membership sites which can offer their subscribers a host of these Internet marketing services designed to improve the member's sales achievements. One such site can be found here: Make Money Off The Internet. It offers top 10 search engine ranking, a search engine keyword tool, content, and everything else you need to make money on your website.

Rodger Bailey, MS and his wife, Isabel, have started a distance learning doctoral program at a small christian university in Tennessee. They are in their mid-60s and chose a degree program which focuses on intensive academic research for social change.

Isn't it strange that many involved in the minute internet marketing sector of the internet believe that the internet is only populated by people with an axe to grind?
I think it is a mistake to leave out the huge percentage of web sites that are created simply to inform.
Internet marketers, with their massive over-supply of what they like to call 'review sites' and 'sales sites' has made the search for information on the web far more difficult and frustrating.
I find it distressing that when I search for information I have to plough through pages of results - each claiming to be a review - before I come across real and valuable information. Even when I do find information, it is often hidden in the sales patter of some commercial web site. On some topics you can be on page 40 or 50 of results before you find a site that really does provide information.
It is very sad,

Thank you for breaking down these website points, Rodger.
There is so much to learn and it's nice to see somethings without hype.
Thanks for sharing.

Being an 'Internet Marketer' myself, I found your intel to be a VERY accurate assessment so applied the maximum rating. Membership sites these days, focus on a combination of the 3 major facts, which is making them THE place for everything Internet related. Everything they want/need can be obtained in the one place. No need to search for anything. It's the lazy option but the most cost/time effective method.

Quite true. Each of us has a need and a requirement. We wish to write and use our writing in various ways.

A very good post, Rodger, and I'm inclined to believe you. Affiliation is being part of a group, being accepted and wanting to achieve.

Peter

Very interesting article. Not sure if I understand it. I would suppose that my blog, and it's related videos are more under the achievement? Maybe? Not really sure. My site is just there to entertain! Where does that fit in!
