Living Green: Getting Off The Grid
By Rodger Bailey
Thinking about going green and living off the grid? Many modern folks have decided that becoming energy independent is a way they want to live. They have decided to find ways of producing their own energy so they are no longer dependent on someone else delivering energy to their home. The "grid" refers to the electrical grid which supplies electricity to most of the homes in the USA. Going "off the grid" refers to a style of life where you provide your own energy for your home. The most common ways of going off the grid is to install solar panels or wind turbines which produce electricity. This is not difficult and there are many downloadable plans which teach you everything you need to know to start generating your own electricity in this fashion. If you hire a contractor to install a factory-built solar or wind generating system for your home, you will pay anywhere from $10,000 to $25,000 for everything. This is a lot of money and it would take you years of use of your system to financially justify that investment. But, generally speaking, with a budget of $150 to $250, you can get the plans and build your own solar panel or wind turbine and start generating electricity very quickly. Most of these plans show you every part you need and give you detailed assembly instructions (many now include video instructions) so that you can build you own system in one weekend. This level of investment will not get you to a point of completely getting off the grid. But, after you learn how to make and install a solar panel or a wind turbine, you will know how many of those individual units you would need to replace your current electrical usage. Surprisingly, it does not require very many solar panels or wind turbines to eliminate your electrical utility bill. Many industrious folks have built their home generating systems to the point where they sell their excess electricity to the grid, instead of buying it from the grid. It's not that difficult and most of the downloadable plans show you how to do all of this. If you are thinking about going green by living off the grid, you will find this approach easy, fulfilling, and financially rewarding.
