Distance Learning Graduate School

By Rodger Bailey

Distance learning is gaining in popularity for graduate students. Many folks are taking online courses for their MBA or other graduate degree. But, if you want to use a distance learning program for a doctorate, there are some things for which you need to plan.

A doctoral program almost always requires research and this research (usually called a dissertation), will need to be reviewed and approved by qualified academics in the field of that research. If you want your doctoral degree to stand up under scrutiny, you should choose a program which will be recognized by others in your field.

Usually this comes from an accredited university program. The process of achieving accreditation is complex and difficult and may take a university many years to achieve.

One of the aspects of accreditation for distance learning doctoral programs seems to be an on-campus residency requirement. A typical distance learning PhD program will require the student to take courses on campus for six to nine weeks over the life of the program. Typically these are broken into one-week programs and a student can come to the university campus for these residency programs based on the student's and the university's schedule.

Assignments keep the distance learning graduate student busy between the residency weeks. If your doctoral program is an accredited one, you should expect the assignments to include research techniques, research, reading, and writing.

In general, an accredited distance learning doctoral program will take three to six years to complete.

Rodger Bailey, MS and his wife, Isabel, have started a distance learning doctoral program at a small christian university in Tennessee. They are in their mid-60s and chose a degree program which focuses on intensive academic research for social change.

Contributor's Note

I recently started a distance learning doctoral program after taking three years to search for the program best suited for me. I enjoyed the on-campus residency and the assignments are intensive and rewarding.
