A Self-Directed Graduate Degree Can Change Your Life

Working to obtain your Masters or Doctoral degree does improve you as a person and will improve your career prospects. But, is an online or distance learning graduate degree going to help you in these ways? Of course, the answer involves a mix of factors. Accreditation: This is the university's recognition as a valid degree-granting institution by certain educational associations. If the school does not have accreditation, the degree they offer might improve you as a person, but may not be useful for improving your career. School Reputation: How well-recognized is the university in your chosen field? There are some careers where this is important, but most of those situations are for degrees where there is no online or distance learning opportunities. A graduate degree from a prestigious university might give you some benefit during initial introductions, but 'who you are' and 'what you do' are much better measures in your path to success. Course Work: Are the courses real? Is there lecture, discussion, study, research, and evaluation? Some 'universities' might only take your tuition and send you the piece of paper. An accredited graduate school has real courses and it takes you years to complete their program. This time is a benefit for you, because you learn more and your degree is considered to be valid. An accredited graduate program which is an online or a distance learning program can improve you as a person and can improve your career. Their degrees are valid. You can study at your own pace and you can complete your study without interfering with your existing career or work. If you are mature and want a graduate degree, an online or distance learning program can be an appropriate way for you to improve your life and your career.
Rodger Bailey, MS and his wife, Isabel, have started a distance learning doctoral program at a small christian university in Tennessee. They are in their mid-60s and chose a degree program which focuses on intensive academic research for social change.

Thanks Don: I just noticed that the website link that was associated with this article was pointing to the wrong site. Distance Learning Graduate Forum was what I intended.
I must admit I'm somewhat surprised distance learning has become a practical reality this quickly. I suppose a graduate degree might in some ways be more suited to distance learning than an undergraduate degree.

Cathy: There are a bunch of these kinds of programs and they are getting better and better. The one that my wife and I attend has been in operation for almost 30 years. It was in operation long before the Internet made online education practical. BTW: I just saw that the link associated with this intel was incorrect.
